East End memories from Essex

Last week, I spoke to husband and wife Richard and Janice in Colchester, Essex. Janice was born and raised in Tower Hamlets and remembers a blissful childhood there. When she was eleven, her family moved to Loughton, Essex, where teachers gave her a hard time for her Cockney accent. Now she would call her own accent ‘bland’ or ‘Southeastern bland’.

Loughton is where she met Richard, who was born and raised on the estate there in an East End family that had migrated earlier. Even though he never lived in London, he says he’s got ‘a London accent’, but ‘definitely not Cockney!’

Not quite within the commuter radius for Londoners (yet):
